Pro Tools via Remote Desktop

iphone

This is a little off the typical blog topics, but it's the coolest piece of equipment I've bought in quite a while. I'll share a few of the experiences I've had with it so far (did I mention the possibility of running Pro Tools via "Remote Desktop" inside the iphone)?

First thing after purchasing the phone, I had to log in to my itunes account. I noticed a new tab over my playlists titled iphone. Upon synchronizing/activating my phone, all of my safari bookmarks, my calender, and address book transfered over.

Yippee! no re-typing all of my contacts into another cell phone. Now most of you know about all the standard features, but a few things really stood out to me:

  • If you are in a Wi-Fi area, you can switch from the standard 2G to the full speed of the Wi-Fi signal. Surfing the net is just as fast as my laptop on the same Wi-Fi signal. When leaving a Wi-Fi zone, you go back to 2G. In my last trip back from teaching classes in Miami, I was able to stay online for the entire 3 1/2 hour drive.
  • When checking my messages, I was able to skip through and choose which one I wanted to listen to 1st, not to mention that it shows who and when the message originated. When playing the message, a bar scrolls across the bottom allowing you to rewind at anytime during the message instead of having to wait till the message ends and then replay.
  • I recently found out that "Remote Desktop" works from the iphone as well. For any newcomers to "remote desktop," it allows you to log on to a remote computer, say your home computer, and run the computer from a remote computer, in this case, the iphone. I can log on to my home computer, view all of my folders and files, copy, paste, etc. from my iphone. Way Cool!!!!! I can set my home computer to download files while sitting in Starbucks having a Latte!

I'll attempt running Pro Tools on my studio computer later via "Remote Desktop." I'll have to patch the outputs of my HD interface into the mic input of my computer so I can hear it from the iphone. We'll have to see how it works later. I've successfully run Pro Tools via "Remote Desktop" from a secondary computer using the described method, so using the iphone shouldn't be much different.

btw, this blog was posted from my iphon.
